Recycling Credits for Primary and Secondary Materials in Automotive Life Cycle Assessment Studies

The automotive industry since several years deals with the question how to assess recycling processes and secondary materials within life cycle assessment. Crucial topics in this context are the allocation of recycling credits of by-products and secondary materials. Through close-loop processes pre- and post-consumer scrap can be collected and recycled. Those scraps can then replace primary materials. From a methodological point of view the consideration of recycling processes is not trivial and recycling credits need to be awarded with utmost care.

Two extreme approaches have been developed and are broadly used in practice. The approach of the first responsibility where no recycling credits are given and the avoided burden approach where full recycling credits are given.

The project targeted the development of a case-specific approach accounting for the situation of automotive recycling processes.
